Tragedy struck Kisoro District on Saturday night with the brutal killing of a well-known businessman, Africano Nteziyaremye, and his wife, Peace Kyompeire. The couple was reportedly shot dead at their home’s main gate around 11 p.m. as they returned from their wholesale business in Kisoro Town.

Kigezi Region Police spokesperson, Nelson Tumushime, confirmed the incident, stating that the assailants’ identities and motives remain unknown. Police detectives, along with a canine unit, have processed the scene for evidence. As of Sunday, no arrests had been made, but authorities are actively pursuing leads to apprehend those responsible.

The deceased have been transported to Kisoro Hospital mortuary for postmortem examinations. The police are urging anyone with information related to the killings to come forward and assist in the investigation.

Local leaders have expressed deep sorrow over the loss, remembering Nteziyaremye as a hardworking and generous individual who significantly contributed to the community, supporting needy residents and local events. His loss is felt keenly by colleagues, politicians, and the wider Kisoro populace.

In response to the attack, security forces, including police and UPDF soldiers, have been deployed to the area. Deputy Resident District Commissioner Dan Ndikumwami has called for enhanced security measures in the border district, which shares frontiers with Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. He emphasized the need for adequate resources, such as patrol vehicles, for security personnel to effectively respond to criminal activities.

Authorities are also considering measures to better monitor the community, including registering foreign residents and their business dealings, to prevent potential hideouts for criminals. This incident occurs against a backdrop of rising violent crime in Uganda, with daily fatalities reported from violent acts and road accidents nationwide.
