Tragedy struck Kisoro Municipality on Saturday night when Africano Nteziyaremye, a well-known local businessman, and his wife, Peace Kyompeire, were fatally shot. The couple was attacked by gunmen at the entrance to their residence in Zindiro village, Northern Division, around 11 pm.
Eyewitnesses reported that the couple was returning from their wholesale shop in a double-cabin pickup truck when motorcycle-borne assailants opened fire on their vehicle as it neared their gate. Both Nteziyaremye and Kyompeire sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene.
Law enforcement responded swiftly, cordoning off the area and deploying a canine unit to aid in the search for the gunmen. The following morning, the Kisoro District Police Commander, Cosmus Edatu, addressed mourners gathered at the victims’ home. While police initially secured the scene, they later allowed access for the community to pay their respects.
Kigezi Region Police spokesperson, Nelson Tumushime, confirmed that no arrests have been made thus far. He emphasized that investigations are active and ongoing, with security agencies collaborating to bring the suspects to justice. The police are appealing to anyone with information that could assist in the apprehension of the killers to come forward.
This shocking incident occurs against a backdrop of previous violent attacks targeting business owners in the Kisoro district, raising concerns about security in the region. Notable past incidents include an attempted robbery at Bweza Lodge last week, a 2025 shooting and robbery of a shop attendant, the 2022 murder of an Indian businessman inside his shop by a police officer, and the 2014 shooting of businessman Dominique Ngirabanzi.
