The patriotism training program in Kamuli District has reached a significant milestone, with over 43,000 students having undergone the initiative since its inception in 2015. District records indicate that as of recent pass-out ceremonies, 42,853 students, comprising 18,967 boys and 23,886 girls, have completed the course.

School administrators have observed a marked improvement in student discipline, communication, and inter-personal relationships as a direct result of the patriotism training. Hawa Adong, head teacher at Emirates Academy Kamuli, noted that patriotism clubs have fostered stronger connections between students, staff, and parents, effectively reducing misunderstandings that often led to strikes.

During a recent pass-out ceremony for students at Emirates Academy and Kamuli Grade Secondary School, Resident District Commissioner Rose Birungi emphasized the importance of promoting community service, good governance, and national pride among the graduates. She highlighted that the program aims to develop well-rounded individuals who are valuable to their communities.

The patriotism curriculum is comprehensive, covering aspects such as national anthems, Ugandan history and geography, moral values, discipline, mindset change, citizens’ duties, mental health, HIV/AIDS awareness, peace and security, crime prevention, and financial literacy. The training culminates in mandatory community service.

Charles Ngobi, the Kamuli District coordinator for patriotism clubs, shared that the program initially faced skepticism but has since gained widespread acceptance. He stated that the initiative has been instrumental in curbing school strikes, which were prevalent in the past. Furthermore, joint activities and debates have helped reduce rivalries among different schools.

Alumni who have participated in the program have reported benefiting from the skills learned, using them in leadership roles and community engagement. The program is seen as a crucial tool for instilling a sense of national consciousness and responsible citizenship in the youth.
