Iganga Nursing Students Not Expelled Despite Forged Payment Slips

Contrary to earlier concerns raised in Parliament, Minister of State for Sports, Hon. Peter Ogwang, stated that no students from Lubega Institute of Nursing and Health Professionals in Iganga have been expelled or suspended. The issue arose when the institute discovered forged bank payment slips, with students allegedly entrusting their fees to an individual who provided fraudulent documentation.

According to the institute’s management, these forged slips indicated higher payment amounts than what was actually remitted. Following an investigation into payment slips presented between January 2025 and June 2026, a total of 80 students were identified as having submitted these fraudulent documents.

Minister Ogwang presented a ministerial statement, assuring the House that the institute has been accommodating. Arrangements have been made for affected students to clear their outstanding fees, with parents facing financial difficulties allowed to pay in installments. Of the 80 students, 15 have completed their courses, while the remaining 65 are continuing students.

Several meetings involving the institute, students, parents, and the police have been held to resolve the matter. The case was reported to the police in September 2026, leading to the arrest of two suspects who have been arraigned in court on charges of forgery, uttering forged documents, and impersonation. The Ministry of Education and Sports is committed to ensuring fair application of the agreed arrangements, balancing students’ right to education with institutional accountability.
