The persistent Ebola outbreak in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is having a devastating impact on the health of the most vulnerable: mothers and children. Fear and mistrust surrounding the epidemic are causing many to shun vital healthcare services, leading to a dangerous decline in routine immunizations and maternal care.
Health facilities in affected regions are struggling to operate normally. Healthcare workers are often overwhelmed by the Ebola response, diverting resources and attention away from other essential health programs. Furthermore, communities, still reeling from the violence and instability that plague eastern Congo, are increasingly wary of seeking medical attention. This distrust is exacerbated by misinformation and fear of contracting Ebola at health centers.
The consequences are dire. Children are missing out on life-saving vaccinations against diseases like measles and polio, increasing their susceptibility to outbreaks. Pregnant women are foregoing antenatal and postnatal care, raising the risks for both mothers and newborns. The disruption to these fundamental health services creates a secondary health crisis on top of the ongoing Ebola epidemic.
International health organizations are working to address this dual challenge, aiming to both contain Ebola and restore confidence in the healthcare system. Efforts include community outreach, public health education campaigns, and ensuring the safety of health workers and patients. However, the complex security situation and deep-seated mistrust present significant hurdles to effectively delivering essential care to those who need it most.
