The High Court in Masaka is facing a legal challenge concerning land ownership on Bunyama Island in Kalangala District. Businessman Andrew Nganda Bugingo has filed an application seeking the cancellation of more than 70 land titles issued to the Ssese Oil Palm Growers Co-operative Society Limited.
Bugingo asserts that the Commissioner for Land Registration transferred the land, located in the Buyija area, to the co-operative society without his consent. He argues that this transfer disregards an existing court consent order that acknowledged his stake in a portion of the property.
The disputed land spans 644 acres, and the petition highlights a conflict between the co-operative society’s land claims and Bugingo’s established legal interests. The court’s decision on this matter could significantly impact land distribution and the operations of oil palm cultivation in the region.
This legal battle unfolds amidst a broader investigation by the police in Masaka into how the Ssese Oil Palm Growers acquired the land in question. The outcome of both the court case and the police inquiry is anticipated to shed light on the land acquisition processes in Kalangala.
