Renowned Ugandan artist Eddy Kenzo has stepped into the ongoing national conversation surrounding President Yoweri Museveni’s directive to ban charcoal burning and trade, offering a strong defense of the policy.

Kenzo, who identifies with the struggles of poverty, believes the ban, issued via Executive Order No. 3 in May 2023, has been misrepresented. He argues that the directive’s primary aim is not to deprive Ugandans of cooking fuel but to safeguard the nation’s rapidly diminishing forest cover.

The “Sitya Loss” singer emphasized the severe environmental consequences of unchecked deforestation, including threats to Uganda’s climate and the very “Pearl of Africa” beauty that defines the country. He also highlighted potential health risks associated with charcoal consumption.

His comments arrive as Parliament, led by Speaker Jacob Oboth, has temporarily halted the enforcement of the ban. This suspension, effective October 14, 2026, awaits a government report detailing the ban’s implementation strategy and the availability of viable alternative cooking energy sources for affected households.

The government has been tasked with presenting this report to Parliament by October 21, amidst widespread concerns about the affordability and accessibility of alternatives for ordinary Ugandans who rely on charcoal for cooking.

Kenzo’s endorsement adds a celebrity voice to the push for environmental conservation, urging a broader consideration of cleaner energy solutions.
