The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has expanded its welfare program with the inauguration of its 16th Defence Forces Shop, located at Katabi Barracks in Entebbe. This new facility is designed to provide soldiers with access to a range of essential items, including construction materials and household goods, at significantly reduced prices.

The initiative aims to directly address the cost of living for military personnel, ensuring they can acquire quality products without the strain of typical market expenses. Deputy Chief of Defence Forces Lt Gen Sam Okiding, who commissioned the shop, emphasized that improving soldiers’ welfare is crucial for maintaining the army’s operational effectiveness and morale. “When a soldier is fighting, he should not be disturbed,” Lt Gen Okiding stated, highlighting the importance of peace of mind derived from stable living conditions.

The Katabi branch offers a diverse inventory, featuring items such as cement, roofing sheets, water tanks, steel bars, paint, soap, and nails. Col Deus Taremwa, General Manager of Defence Forces Shop Uganda Limited, explained that the product selection is demand-driven and aims to cater to the needs of soldiers across all ranks. The organization is committed to operating as a financially sustainable business that upholds integrity and professionalism.

Air Force Commander Lt Gen Charles Okidi also spoke at the event, recognizing the shops as a vital component of support for soldiers and their families. He cautioned management against personal enrichment through these welfare initiatives and urged for transparent operations.

The expansion of the Defence Forces Shop network underscores the UPDF leadership’s ongoing commitment to enhancing the well-being of its personnel. The opening of the Katabi branch brings the total number of shops to sixteen, signifying a continued effort to support those who serve the nation.
