Mubende High Court is buzzing with activity and a significant security presence as preparations get underway for a critical vote recount. The exercise is set to take place on Friday concerning the disputed Kassanda South parliamentary election.
Ballot boxes from the election have already been transported to the court premises, marking the start of a process intended to verify the accuracy of the results. This recount comes after a directive from Justice Mary Babirye, who is presiding over election petitions at the High Court.
The legal challenge was initiated by Eria Mubiru, an independent candidate who contested the declaration of Hajji Abdul Bisaso of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) as the victor. Mubiru’s petition hinges on his request for a recount to ensure the declared results accurately reflect the votes cast.
Security forces are on high alert to maintain order and ensure the recount proceeds smoothly and peacefully. The process is anticipated to attract considerable attention from the supporters of both candidates as the court meticulously examines the disputed ballots.
While the recount is a key component of the ongoing legal dispute, its outcome alone will not automatically overturn the election results. It serves as crucial evidence that will aid the court in its final determination of the petition. The findings will help establish the integrity of the vote tally.
