The Mubende High Court Circuit has officially opened a significant criminal session, geared towards addressing a caseload of around 50 serious offenses. These cases encompass grave charges such as aggravated defilement, murder, rape, aggravated robbery, and human trafficking.
The session commenced with a crucial pre-session meeting on October 14, 2026, presided over by Justice Anthony Oyuko Ojok. During the meeting, Justice Ojok underscored the importance of efficient case processing and urged all justice sector stakeholders to prioritize the timely administration of justice.
Justice Ojok acknowledged the judiciary’s commitment by allocating necessary resources for the session. He encouraged participants to be mindful of time, ensure only essential witnesses are summoned, and leverage the court’s information technology systems to enhance operational efficiency. “Although 50 cases have been listed for this session, I am prepared to handle more cases involving inmates interested in plea bargaining,” Ojok stated.
A joint cause-listing exercise determined the order of proceedings, prioritizing older cases, matters involving vulnerable groups like women and juveniles, and those concerning inmates from Kitalya, Kaweeri, and Muinaina prisons. Some lengthy-standing cases with defendants out on bail were also included.
The preparatory meeting, facilitated by His Worship Rogers Kinobe Binega, saw participation from key justice sector representatives, including the Director of Public Prosecutions, Justice Centres, private lawyers, police, prison services, probation officers, and court assessors. This collaborative effort aimed to streamline coordination among agencies for the prompt resolution of these cases. The session is set to begin with plea-taking on October 16, 2026, followed by the substantive hearings.
