A recent fire that ravaged a furniture shop in Kireka, causing substantial losses for local traders, has spurred Kira Municipality MP George Musisi to call for a critical enhancement of Uganda’s emergency response capabilities.

The blaze, which occurred opposite Farmers Market, reportedly destroyed valuable stock including timber and mattresses, leaving business owners, some of whom are servicing loans, facing severe financial hardship. This incident highlights the vulnerability of businesses already grappling with economic challenges.

MP Musisi expressed his commitment to assisting the affected traders, stating his efforts to mobilize support to help them recover. He underscored the urgency of the situation, especially given the current economic climate.

Musisi pointed to the heavy traffic on Jinja Road as a significant factor that delayed the fire brigade’s arrival, hindering their ability to contain the fire promptly. He believes that a more decentralized approach to firefighting resources is essential.

“It’s high time that we saw fire brigade trucks at every police division. Police divisions have been decentralized. We have even here in Kira, we have a police division. What stops us from having a fire brigade truck at every division level?” Musisi questioned, advocating for a strategic placement of firefighting equipment.

He argued that having fire trucks stationed at police divisions would drastically reduce response times, thereby minimizing property damage during emergencies. Musisi stressed that Uganda needs to invest in decentralizing these vital services to ensure communities can receive timely assistance.

While the exact cause of the fire remains unconfirmed by police, eyewitnesses at the scene suggested it may have originated from burning rubbish igniting an electrical wire. Musisi emphasized that “Every minute counts” and urged the government to prioritize investment in firefighting capacity over post-disaster loss assessments.
