Minister of Health, Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, has voiced strong disapproval of the inhumane treatment often directed towards individuals suffering from mental health conditions. He highlighted instances where people experiencing mental breakdowns are treated like criminals, facing arrest and societal stigma as if their illness were a transgression.
Dr. Baryomunsi emphasized that mental illness can affect anyone, regardless of age, and stressed the importance of providing proper medical care. “Anybody can get a mental illness, whether you are a child or an old person; anybody of us can have his mental health break down,” he stated.
He urged Ugandans to direct individuals experiencing mental health challenges to specialized government health facilities instead of involving the police. “Do not take these people to the police; do not treat them as if they are not part of society, but take them to health facilities,” he pleaded.
Echoing these sentiments, Dr. Juliet Nakku, Executive Director of Butabika National Mental Referral Hospital, advised parents and guardians to be vigilant in monitoring children for early signs of mental illness. Proactive observation and intervention are crucial to prevent the escalation of conditions and the subsequent stress on caregivers.
This call to action aims to foster a more compassionate and supportive environment for those struggling with mental health issues, promoting access to care and reducing discrimination. The government has established facilities across the country to cater to these needs.
