The Uganda Police Marine Unit has issued a stern warning, urging the public and all water transport operators to strictly observe safety protocols. This call comes in response to a concerning rise in water-related accidents across the country.
IP Makokha Vicent, speaking on a local television program, emphasized that the use of life jackets is paramount and significantly boosts survival rates in the event of a mishap. He also advised individuals to acquire basic swimming skills, which can be crucial for self-preservation against aquatic wildlife such as crocodiles and hippos.
Furthermore, the Marine Unit is calling on beach owners to maintain meticulous records of individuals utilizing boats on their premises. This practice, according to IP Makokha, is vital for swift identification of survivors and victims during rescue operations and aids police in their follow-up investigations.
Personal responsibility was also highlighted, with a caution against peer pressure, especially for non-swimmers. Boat operators have been warned against operating under the influence of alcohol, a dangerous practice that jeopardizes both their lives and those of their passengers. Possession of valid operating licenses was also stressed as a mandatory requirement.
The Police Marine Unit assured the public of its readiness, stating that they possess adequate personnel and equipment for effective patrols and safety enforcement on all water bodies. The public is encouraged to report any water accidents to the police immediately to ensure a prompt and effective response. Special attention is being paid to the months of June and July, typically characterized by strong winds that often lead to increased accidents.
