President Yoweri Museveni has implored South Sudan to prioritize peace and stability as the nation approaches its general elections scheduled for December 22. This election will mark South Sudan’s first since gaining independence in 2011.
During a meeting at State House Entebbe with a South Sudanese delegation led by the Minister of Trade and Industry, Dr. Labanya Margaret Mathya Ugila, President Museveni emphasized the importance of continued cooperation between Uganda and South Sudan. The discussions also touched upon key bilateral issues, including addressing trade barriers, improving security along the vital Juba-Nimule road, and advancing the electricity transmission project.
Museveni noted that Uganda currently exports approximately $700 million worth of goods to South Sudan annually, but sees potential for significant growth. “We must address trade barriers, improve security along the Juba - Nimule road and advance the electricity transmission project,” he stated.
The upcoming elections in South Sudan follow recent amendments to the country’s election law, which have been met with some opposition concerns regarding consultation processes. Community leaders in South Sudan have also voiced hopes for non-violent resolution of political differences.
In separate discussions, President Museveni also engaged with an EU delegation, advocating for European support in processing African raw materials to create jobs and foster mutual prosperity. He also met with Mehamood Hosein of HIVE Global Group to explore opportunities in Uganda’s Artificial Intelligence sector.
