A significant fire outbreak at the Wandegeya Police barracks in Kampala on Thursday afternoon has resulted in the destruction of property valued in the millions of shillings. The blaze prompted a swift response from emergency services, with over ten fire brigade vehicles, ambulances, and other teams deployed to combat the flames.
Inspector General of Police Abas Byakagaba visited the scene shortly after the fire began and confirmed that no injuries were reported. He assured affected officers that the police force would provide support to help them recover from the loss of their personal belongings and other property. An investigation is currently underway to determine the exact cause of the fire.
Concerns have been raised regarding the high density of accommodation at the barracks. Kampala Resident City Commissioner Umaru Lule Mawiya noted that while the cause is yet to be confirmed, the close proximity of the housing units may have exacerbated the extent of the damage. This sentiment was echoed by Kampala Mayor Ronald Balimwezo, who visited the site and offered his sympathy.
Mayor Balimwezo urged the police leadership to prioritize adequate spacing in the design and construction of future accommodation facilities. He emphasized that sufficient space between buildings is crucial for facilitating emergency access and minimizing damage during such incidents.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Racheal Kawala confirmed the deployment of the Police Fire Prevention and Rescue Services team and stated that comprehensive investigations are ongoing to ascertain the cause and the total value of the property lost. The incident highlights potential challenges related to infrastructure and safety in densely populated police housing.
