Kyabazinga William Gabula Nadiope IV has urged the Ministry of Health to harness the extensive network of cultural institutions for improved community healthcare. Speaking at the Ministry of Health’s fourth Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Conference, the monarch emphasized that kingdoms possess established grassroots structures, such as chiefs and clan leaders, capable of significantly complementing government health programs.

Gabula highlighted the over 200,000 “Empango Village community safeguarding committees” in Busoga as a prime example of a ready-made network that can be leveraged for health promotion and disease prevention efforts. He stressed that these existing structures can effectively deliver health information and mobilize communities for preventive care.

A significant concern raised by the Kyabazinga, who also serves as a UN National Goodwill Ambassador to End Teenage Pregnancy, was the alarming rate of teenage pregnancies in Busoga, which stands at 28% compared to the national average of 24%. He pointed out that this issue has severe social and economic consequences, often interrupting girls’ education and limiting their future opportunities.

To combat this, Gabula advocated for community-based interventions that focus on school retention, mentorship for young boys, and economic empowerment for the youth. He believes that collective action, including keeping girls in school and providing skills for the economy, is crucial.

The conference, themed “Positioning Community Structures for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention,” underscored the importance of strengthening Village Health Teams (VHTs) and other community health workers. Discussions also covered immunisation, maternal and child health, mental health, and countering health misinformation, all emphasizing the vital role of community-level interventions in extending healthcare access.

Vice President Jessica Alupo reaffirmed the government’s commitment to health priorities and commended the Kyabazinga for his dedication to health initiatives, recognizing the potential of stronger partnerships between government health bodies and local community structures. https://nilepost.co.ug/news/378592/kyabazinga-calls-for-greater-role-of-kingdom-structures-in-community-healthcare
