The Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) is set to expand its presence in Uganda by introducing green hydrogen products. This move is part of a broader environmental preservation agenda being championed by the network.

Amin Mawji OBE, the AKDN Diplomatic Representative in Uganda, announced the plan during a courtesy visit to Speaker Jacob Marksons Oboth. Mawji explained that the planned facility will extract nitrogen from water at a significantly lower cost than conventional fertilizers. This innovation is expected to empower Ugandan farmers by reducing their dependence on external fertilizer supplies.

The AKDN is reportedly in discussions with the Ministries of Energy and Finance to secure support for this ambitious project. Beyond green energy, AKDN is also making substantial investments in the health and education sectors.

Two new pharmaceutical industries are currently under construction in Namanve Industrial Park, and a new Aga Khan University Hospital is being established in Nakawa, which will also function as a teaching hospital.

Speaker Oboth lauded the AKDN’s contributions to Uganda’s development, particularly in the education, health, and energy sectors. He noted the network’s long-standing commitment to Uganda’s progress, referencing past involvements in education, pharmaceuticals, the Bujagali power project, and the former Air Uganda.
