Residents in Ntungamo District can look forward to improved connectivity as construction of the Shs95.67 million Ruhorobo Bridge begins. The project is set to restore a crucial crossing that was washed away by floodwaters, significantly impacting local access to markets, schools, and health facilities for communities in Rwoho and Nyakyera town councils.

The new bridge is expected to be completed within two months. Its construction aims to resolve the transportation challenges faced by residents, who have struggled to move agricultural produce and access essential services since the previous bridge was destroyed.

According to District Roads Engineer Moses Twiine, the construction will adhere to technical guidelines from the Ministry of Works and Transport to ensure the bridge’s durability and safety. “We had preliminary assessments conducted to determine a suitable design capable of withstanding the water flow that previously destroyed the crossing,” Twiine stated.

Ntungamo District Chairperson Samuel Muchunguzi highlighted that the new structure will feature a two-meter metallic pipe to enhance drainage and mitigate future flood damage. The bridge is designed to last between 20 to 30 years and will be capable of supporting heavy truck traffic, thereby strengthening economic links between the town councils and easing the movement of goods.

Ruhaama East MP Moses Kahima Mugabe noted that deforestation has exacerbated the impact of runoff from surrounding hills, contributing to the destruction of the previous crossing. He urged district leaders to closely monitor the construction process to guarantee quality, accountability, and value for money.

Meanwhile, district officials are also overseeing maintenance on the 13-kilometer Katinda–Kagarama road, a Shs97.62 million project involving grading and gravelling to improve accessibility for residents and farmers.
