Residents of Rwamiganda Village in Rubanda District took matters into their own hands on Wednesday, intercepting and burning two motorcycles. The mob accused the riders of being involved in a spate of livestock thefts plaguing the area.
Kigezi Region Police spokesperson, Nelson Tumushime, confirmed that the burnt wreckage of the motorcycles has been recovered as evidence. “We strongly condemn acts of mob justice. Taking the law into your own hands is criminal,” Mr. Tumushime stated, emphasizing that such actions are illegal.
Police are urging the community to channel any suspicions or information about crimes directly to the police or local leaders. This incident highlights ongoing concerns about livestock theft in the region, prompting swift and, in this case, illegal action from residents.
In a separate but related event, police in Rubanda arrested an 18-year-old, Timothy Akanyijuka, on Tuesday for allegedly possessing three stolen goats. He was apprehended during an early morning operation and reportedly found transporting the animals without the necessary documentation or proof of ownership.
Authorities are appealing to anyone who may have recently had goats stolen to visit the Rubanda Police Station for identification. Police investigations into both the motorcycle burning and the alleged livestock possession are continuing, with efforts to identify both the suspected thieves and those involved in the mob action.
This dual incident underscores the challenges faced by law enforcement in Rubanda, balancing the need to address crime with preventing vigilantism. Police continue to warn the public against purchasing livestock without verifying ownership and proper movement permits. Source: Daily Monitor (Uganda)
