Kisoro Leaders Criticize MPs Over Stalled Mucha Bridge Repairs

Leaders in Kisoro District are expressing frustration over the delayed repair of Mucha Bridge, a critical artery connecting the area to Bukimbiri County, vital tourism sites, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Councillors, during a monitoring visit, highlighted that the bridge’s current state is severely impeding the movement of people and goods, directly impacting residents of Nyundo Sub-county.
Concerns are particularly acute regarding access to healthcare, with pregnant women and other individuals facing difficulties reaching medical facilities. The situation is expected to worsen with the onset of the rainy season, making the already precarious crossing even more dangerous. Local leaders are urging the district engineer and area MPs to prioritize the bridge’s restoration.
Furthermore, councillors pointed to divisions among Kisoro’s Members of Parliament as a major stumbling block in securing the necessary funding and attention from the central government. They argue that this political discord is hindering collective lobbying efforts, potentially causing development projects and resources to be diverted to other districts. The crisis at Mucha Bridge is seen as an opportunity for legislators to demonstrate unity and commitment to their constituents by advocating for immediate intervention from the Ministry of Works and Transport.
The damage not only affects daily commutes and access to services but also poses risks to travelers and hinders economic opportunities for local businesses and the tourism sector, which relies on this route. The district administration has advised motorists to seek alternative routes while efforts are underway to secure the substantial funding required for repairs, which is beyond the district’s financial capacity and necessitates central government support.
