Construction on the vital 145km Busunju–Hoima Road, a key section of the Kampala–Hoima Highway, has reached the 40% completion mark. The Ugandan government has announced plans to disburse an advance of Shs175 billion to Abubaker Technical Services, the local firm undertaking the project, to ensure its timely completion.

Minister of Works and Transport, Fred Byamukama, revealed during an inspection tour on October 13, 2026, that President Yoweri Museveni has approved the financial boost. This advance aims to address cash flow challenges faced by the contractor, enabling them to accelerate work.

A significant portion of the advance, Shs65 billion, has been specifically allocated for the reconstruction of the River Kafu Bridge. This bridge has been a recurring problem, prone to flooding that disrupts traffic. The upgrade is essential to guarantee a reliable connection, especially in preparation for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament hosted by Uganda.

The minister acknowledged that past governmental neglect contributed to the need for some sections of the road to undergo reconstruction rather than routine maintenance. He emphasized the importance of periodic upkeep for existing infrastructure.

The contract for the Busunju–Hoima Road has seen its duration extended by nine months, following the expiration of the initial three-year period. In addition to supporting local contractors, Minister Byamukama issued a stern warning to foreign firms, threatening to terminate contracts for companies demonstrating incompetence, citing specific Chinese firms working on other projects.

During the tour, Byamukama also addressed issues related to land acquisition and Project-Affected Persons (PAPs) for bypass projects, clarifying compensation procedures. He reiterated the government’s commitment to resolving challenges and facilitating the swift delivery of essential road infrastructure.
