Minister of State for Sports, Peter Ogwang, has clarified that no students were expelled from Lubega Institute of Nursing and Health Professionals in Iganga District due to a recent forgery incident. The situation involved 80 students who allegedly entrusted their tuition fees to an individual, who then provided them with fake payment slips.

According to the institute’s management, these forged slips indicated higher amounts paid than what was actually remitted. Following concerns raised in Parliament, Ogwang presented a ministerial statement confirming that the institute has not expelled or suspended any of the affected students.

Instead, the institute is working with the students and their parents to ensure they can clear their outstanding balances. Those facing financial difficulties are permitted to pay in installments while continuing their education. Of the 80 students initially identified, 15 have completed their courses, and 55 are current students.

Nine of the continuing students have already settled their fees and returned to their studies, with the remainder in the process of completing their payments. The institute has stated that students can return, receive counseling, and resume their studies once these arrangements are met, with no strict deadline imposed.

The issue surfaced in June 2025 when the institute noticed discrepancies between its records and bank statements. Bank verification confirmed the forgery of several payment slips presented by students between January 2025 and June 2026.

The case was reported to the police in September 2026, and subsequent meetings involving the institute, students, parents, and police were held to resolve the matter. Two suspects have been arrested and charged with forgery, uttering forged documents, and impersonation.

The Ministry of Education and Sports is committed to working with the institute to ensure fair application of the agreed arrangements and to support students in resuming their studies. This situation highlights the need to balance students’ right to education with institutional accountability and integrity.
