Members of Parliament and regional representatives from the Democratic Party (DP) are seeking an audience with the party’s National Council. The primary objective is to air internal grievances and critically assess the ongoing cooperation agreement with the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).

Patrick Okello, the MP for Aswa County, highlighted that this proposed meeting would serve as a crucial platform for members to articulate their concerns to the party leadership. He emphasized that many individuals hold genuine grievances that warrant attention.

While the exact date for the meeting is still pending confirmation due to parliamentary schedules, Okello indicated that organizers are working to find a suitable day. The delay is attributed to the demanding nature of committee work and the upcoming national budgeting process, which is vital for determining constituency development priorities.

The agenda for the engagement is expected to be broad, encompassing party administration, policy matters, internal discipline, the legislative agenda, and the future direction of the DP. The discussions are also anticipated to delve into the effectiveness of the cooperation agreement with the NRM, considering whether amendments or even termination of the pact are necessary.

Okello suggested that the current agreement, particularly in the context of the 11th Parliament, might have run its course. He described the existing arrangement as a ‘gentleman’s agreement’ that has effectively expired with the parliamentary term.

This planned meeting follows the earlier postponement of a DP National Executive Committee meeting due to scheduling conflicts with the burial of the Omukama of Bunyoro. The upcoming session aims to foster dialogue and clarify the DP’s stance on its political cooperation with the NRM.

Consultations are ongoing to finalize a date that accommodates all participants, ensuring a productive discussion on these critical party matters.
