Ukraine has successfully stabilized its front lines and “broken Russia’s ability to advance” due to the high number of Russian casualties, according to Oleksandr Syrskyi, the former commander-in-chief of Ukraine’s armed forces. In his first interview since being removed from his post, Syrskyi told the BBC that Moscow’s overall losses in the ongoing conflict are approximately six times greater than Ukraine’s, with Russian fatalities potentially up to 11 times higher.
Syrskyi addressed his controversial dismissal, refuting claims that he was “old school” and unable to adapt Ukraine’s forces to modern warfare. He also pushed back against accusations from soldiers who served under him, stating that claims of being ordered to hold positions despite being surrounded were false. He attributed the current military stalemate to the significant disparity in casualties, technological advancements, and a Ukrainian strategy focused on exploiting Russian weaknesses while containing their advances.
According to Syrskyi, Russia only managed to seize 61 square kilometers of territory in the first half of 2026, indicating a stabilized front. This assertion is supported by reports from the Institute for Study of War (ISW), which noted that Moscow lost more territory than it gained in September 2026.
Appointed commander-in-chief in 2024, Syrskyi had previously been commended for his role in defending Kyiv in 2022 and leading a successful counteroffensive in Kharkiv. His dismissal followed significant disagreements with then-defense minister Mykhailo Fedorov over military procurement and strategy. Syrskyi stated that these disagreements stemmed from Fedorov not considering the army’s interests when acquiring weapons and supplies.
