The Uganda Squash Rackets Association (USRA) is taking significant steps to grow the sport beyond its traditional urban strongholds. A recent three-day trainers’ clinic held in Gulu, from October 8-10, marked a key moment in their expansion strategy.

This initiative, which culminated on World Squash Day, drew over 150 participants. Attendees included teachers and district sports officers from a wide range of northern districts such as Gulu, Lira, Terego, Yumbe, Zombo, Oyam, Pader, Nebbi, and Koboko. The goal is to embed squash into local communities and educational institutions.

USRA’s efforts are partly driven by the need to comply with the National Sports Act 2023, which mandates a widespread presence across districts for national sports associations to gain certification from the National Council of Sports (NCS). Currently, squash is primarily concentrated in Kampala, Mbarara, and Tororo.

Participants like Jane Achola, a teacher from Lamwo district, expressed enthusiasm for the sport and pledged to introduce it to fellow teachers and students in her school. Braxton Ojara, the Gulu district sports officer, highlighted how the USRA’s presence and training have simplified his role in identifying and promoting local sports talent.

USRA president Issa Bbale Sseremba emphasized the crucial role schools will play in this nationwide outreach. By training educators, the association aims to establish a sustainable network for recruiting and developing new squash players throughout Uganda.
