The Rotary Club of Makanga has stepped in to support the paediatric department of Kabale Regional Referral Hospital with a significant donation of essential items.

This initiative aims to enhance the care provided to children and alleviate some of the pressures faced by healthcare workers who are often stretched thin with limited resources.

The club’s president, Micheal Kyakashari, highlighted the paediatric ward as a particularly vulnerable and needy unit within the hospital, prompting their focused support.

According to Pidson Kamugisha, a nursing officer in the department, a considerable number of children admitted daily are grappling with severe diarrhea and malnutrition. The ward sees between six to ten new patients each day, translating to approximately 150 to 200 admissions monthly.

Kamugisha also pointed out a critical gap in post-discharge care, noting a frequent shortage of nutritional supplements for children with malnutrition to take home, which sometimes leads to readmission shortly after recovery.

Pastor Christine Barigye Tina Tukakira, who officiated the donation, emphasized the importance of such community efforts in recognizing and addressing the needs of the most vulnerable members of society.

This contribution from the Rotary Club of Makanga is expected to make a tangible difference in the daily operations of the ward and the well-being of its young patients.
