A Qantas flight destined for Australia was grounded on Saturday following the discovery of a bedbug infestation aboard the aircraft.
The Boeing 787 Dreamliner, scheduled to fly from Rome to Perth, was cancelled to allow for a thorough “deep clean” by maintenance crews.
The issue reportedly stemmed from the aircraft’s previous flight on Friday, a nearly 17-hour journey from Perth to Rome. During that trip, several passengers in the economy section complained of being bitten by insects. Passengers were reportedly offered antihistamines to manage the itching, but supplies eventually ran out.
A Qantas spokesperson expressed sincere apologies to the affected customers for the disruption, explaining that the cancellation was necessary to address the identified issue in a small number of economy seats.
Customers impacted by the cancellation were provided with accommodation and rebooked onto alternative flights, with arrangements completed within 48 hours of their original departure time.
Bedbugs are small, parasitic insects that can cause itchy bites but are generally not known to transmit serious diseases, according to the NHS. However, they can be challenging and costly to eradicate.
This incident is not the first time bedbugs have caused travel disruptions. Similar issues have been reported on train services in England and on flights with other airlines, including British Airways and Turkish Airlines, in recent years.
