Speaker of Parliament Jacob Oboth has signaled strong parliamentary backing for the Inspectorate of Government (IGG), committing to fill 168 vacant positions and boost operational funding. This commitment comes as the IGG presented its 55th Bi-Annual Performance Report, highlighting significant strides in recovering stolen public funds.

Mr. Oboth described corruption in Uganda as a pervasive and evolving “industry,” noting that perpetrators are becoming increasingly adept at concealing illicit activities. He emphasized the need to adapt legislation and pledged to ensure that parliamentary recommendations from oversight reports are formally submitted to the IGG for implementation.

The IGG’s report detailed efforts between January and June 2026, including orders for the recovery of approximately Shs41.6 billion, with Shs5.7 billion already secured. The agency also reported a strong 89.7 percent conviction rate in 29 prosecuted cases before the Anti-Corruption Court and the Leadership Code Tribunal.

Despite these achievements, Leader of the Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi raised concerns about the lack of progress in several high-profile corruption cases following publicized arrests. He cautioned that without diligent prosecution, these actions could devolve into “showbiz,” undermining public confidence in the justice system.

Mr. Ssenyonyi called for greater transparency and consistency in prosecutorial decisions, urging for rigorous follow-up on all reported cases. Inspector General of Government Lady Justice Aisha Naluzze Batala acknowledged the importance of legislative support but stressed the critical need for increased funding and specialized personnel to effectively execute the IGG’s mandate.

During the event, Lady Justice Batala also launched the Inspectorate’s Strategic Plan for 2025/26–2029/30, alongside its Client Charter and other public information materials. The discussions underscored the ongoing challenges and commitments in Uganda’s fight against corruption.
