In Uganda, the humble orange-fleshed sweet potato (OFSP) is transforming the livelihoods of women farmers, turning barren lands into sources of prosperity. Various women farmer groups across the country are now reaping substantial financial rewards from cultivating this nutrient-rich crop.

The OFSP variety is highly sought after due to its impressive nutritional profile, particularly its high beta-carotene content. A modest serving of 125 grams can provide a significant portion of an individual’s daily Vitamin A requirement, a critical nutrient often lacking in the diets of many Ugandans. This nutritional benefit is a major driver of demand.

Beyond the health advantages, the economic opportunities presented by OFSP are substantial. Farmer groups have established robust value chains, from cultivation to processing and marketing. Some groups are processing the sweet potatoes into various products like flour, crisps, and juice, thereby adding value and fetching higher prices in the market.

This successful venture has not only boosted household incomes but has also empowered women, giving them greater financial autonomy and a stronger voice within their communities. The adoption of OFSP cultivation is a testament to the power of agricultural innovation in addressing both nutritional security and economic development.
