Kampala experienced a devastating bout of heavy rains on Sunday, October 11th, leading to fatalities and widespread property destruction across the metropolitan area. The Uganda Police Force confirmed the tragic events on Monday.

In Bulabira Zone, the lifeless body of an unidentified man, believed to be between 22 and 28 years old, was discovered in a drainage trench. Authorities suspect he was carried to the site by the intense floodwaters.

Tragically, in Ttuba Zone, Kyanja Parish, 25-year-old Jalia Nameere lost her life when a perimeter wall collapsed onto her rented accommodation during the overnight downpour.

Both deceased individuals have been transferred to the mortuary for postmortem examinations. The police are appealing to the public for information regarding any missing relatives who match the description of the unidentified man, requesting they contact Najjera Police Station.

Beyond the human toll, the rains wreaked havoc on property. A red TVS motorcycle (registration UFG 529A) was retrieved from floodwaters in Kiganda Zone, Kireka. In Mbalwa, Mark Lwanga suffered damage to his Toyota Sienta (UBH 630P) and a destroyed perimeter wall on his property due to the flooding.

Police have documented these scenes and are conducting ongoing investigations. They have issued a stern warning to the public, advising against venturing into flooded areas, drainage channels, and trenches. Drivers and pedestrians are urged to exercise extreme caution and avoid crossing fast-flowing water. Furthermore, residents are cautioned to stay clear of potentially unstable walls and structures.

Property owners are strongly encouraged to regularly inspect their buildings for any signs of structural weakness, especially as the rainy season continues.
