Abel Bizimana, a prominent figure and Lifetime Honorary Wildlife Officer of Uganda, has issued a strong call for action regarding the deteriorating road infrastructure in Kisoro. He advocates for organized peaceful protests by tourism operators and the wider community to pressure the government into addressing the critical issue.
Bizimana highlighted that the poor condition of roads, particularly the collapse of the Kisoro–Bukimbiri road at River Mucha Bridge, is severely impacting access to key tourism destinations. This has led to increased reliance on alternative routes like the Karengyere–Nyanamo–Rubuguri–Rushaga–Nkuringo road, which itself is in a state of disrepair.
He stressed that individual efforts are insufficient to tackle the systemic problem. Instead, tourism stakeholders must unite and employ coordinated advocacy, including press conferences and peaceful demonstrations, to draw national attention to the road crisis. Bizimana expressed concern over the government’s perceived silence on the matter.
According to Bizimana, he has already engaged the Member of Parliament for Bukimbiri County, Eddie Kwizera Wagahungu, who has reportedly escalated the issue to the Minister of Works. Bizimana urged other Kisoro District legislators to join this collective effort to find a lasting solution to the infrastructure challenges plaguing the vital tourism sector.
Echoing these concerns, Juliet Kamusiime, Kisoro District Youth Councillor, specifically pointed to the Nyanamo–Rubuguri road, which has been plagued by potholes for over three years. She criticized the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) for its inaction and called for the prioritization of roads that serve tourism communities and destinations, emphasizing that poor infrastructure continues to hinder accessibility in the district.
