Mathias Daka, the recently crowned leader of the Budaka clan within the Bagwere Cultural Institution, has raised alarms regarding the significant threat posed by political interference to the future of cultural leadership.

Speaking at his coronation ceremony on Saturday at the Budaka Saza grounds, Daka articulated that traditional leaders and the vital preservation of cultural identity are currently under siege from internal wrangles and external intrigues, largely fueled by political machinations.

“The institution is being undermined by politics. It is politics that is likely to kill off the institution,” Daka stated, emphasizing the urgent need for clan heads within Bugwere land to remain steadfast and steer the institution back onto its intended course.

He stressed the importance of cultural institutions being founded on robust leadership, unity, and teamwork to effectively counteract divisive tactics often employed by politicians. Daka believes that the primary focus of cultural leadership should remain on safeguarding customs, fostering community unity, and protecting heritage, rather than engaging in political disputes.

To bolster their strength and relevance, Daka highlighted that cultural institutions must champion education and mobilize their communities towards economic empowerment, ensuring food security, and actively participating in government development initiatives.

The new clan head also introduced his 17-member executive committee, who will serve as his cabinet. Budaka is recognized as one of the 87 clans under the broader Bagwere Cultural Institution. Echoing similar sentiments, Budaka County MP Moses Goire urged cultural institutions to resist the temptation of self-gain at the expense of their constituents.
