The iconic anthem of Busoga Kingdom, a melody that resonates with the identity of the Basoga people, was not born in a formal setting but emerged organically from everyday life. Arthur Wilson Musulube, the mastermind behind this cherished song, describes the creative process as one that unfolded in ordinary moments – while walking, humming tunes, or simply lost in thought.
Musulube, who was honored with the Source of the Nile Medal in 2019, revealed that inspiration for the lyrics and musical composition often struck unexpectedly. These flashes of creativity would occur even during mundane activities, such as being in the toilet, highlighting the unpredictable nature of artistic genesis. His goal was to capture and preserve the essence of Busoga’s heritage through music.
Following the restoration of traditional institutions in Uganda in 1993, Busoga Kingdom, like others, found itself in need of a unifying anthem. Musulube’s contribution filled this void, providing a powerful symbol of unity and pride for the Basoga community. The anthem has since become a powerful tool in bringing people together and celebrating their shared cultural identity.
His work underscores the profound impact that music can have in fostering a sense of belonging and preserving cultural legacies. The Busoga Kingdom anthem stands as a testament to Musulube’s vision and his ability to translate the spirit of his people into an enduring musical piece.
