The Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) has revealed that a significant number of schools, specifically 47, did not register any candidates for the 2026 Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) examinations. The examinations commenced on October 12, and the absence of these schools from the registration lists has prompted concern regarding the educational pathways available to students in those institutions.
UNEB’s statement did not clarify the specific reasons behind these schools not registering candidates. It remains unclear whether these centers have ceased operations, if they lacked eligible Senior Four students for the examinations, or if their learners registered through alternative examination venues.
This development comes as over 500,000 candidates across the country are participating in the 2026 UCE exams. UNEB has emphasized its commitment to ensuring a credible examination process, collaborating with security agencies and education officials to prevent malpractice.
The board had previously issued directives for schools to display candidate registers publicly, urging parents and guardians to verify their children’s registration status ahead of the exams. This measure aimed to identify and address any discrepancies or unregistered candidates.
The total number of candidates registered for this year’s UCE examinations reached 503,214, with a slightly higher proportion of females (264,788) compared to males (238,426).
