Annet Nsiimine, 33, recounts a devastating ordeal at Kikuube Health Centre IV, where she claims medical staff demanded a Shs200,000 bribe before assisting with her labor. When she couldn’t meet the full demand, she was allegedly handed to an intern doctor who sought a smaller bribe to expedite the delivery.
The delivery was reportedly mishandled, leading to the tragic death of Nsiimine’s newborn. Subsequent examinations revealed severe uterine damage, necessitating the emergency removal of her uterus. The complications did not end there, as her urethra was also blocked during the procedure, causing fluid retention and progressive kidney damage.
Nsiimine is now in critical condition, with doctors indicating she urgently needs surgery to remove a damaged kidney. The estimated cost of this life-saving operation exceeds Shs1 million, a sum she cannot afford.
“I lost my baby, my uterus, and now my health is deteriorating every single day,” Nsiimine stated, expressing her desperation for justice and medical aid. “All I want is justice and the medical help I need to survive.”
Following the incident, senior doctors at the health facility reported the matter to the police. However, Nsiimine claims she began receiving death threats, forcing her to flee her home district and seek refuge in the Central Region. She is currently experiencing intense physical pain and emotional distress while seeking specialized medical care.
Human rights organizations and legal advocates are being called upon to support Nsiimine with her medical expenses and to ensure accountability for the alleged extortion and medical negligence.
