Nekemeya Memorial Seed Secondary School in Kalangala District will no longer host its Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) examinations at its own premises. The Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) has decided to move the 15 candidates to Bishop Dunsan Memorial Secondary School, effective Tuesday, October 13, until November 3.

This decision follows a report detailing the school’s struggle to raise over Shs6 million needed for fuel to transport examination papers from Kalangala Town to the school on Buuvu Island and back over the 12-day examination period. The headteacher, Ms Rose Nalugemwa, had appealed for assistance, stating that only 100 litres of the required 580 litres of petrol had been secured.

Local leaders, including Resident District Commissioner Fred Badda and Assistant RDC Kajubi Twahika Kironde, alongside area MPs, managed to mobilize 300 litres of petrol, which was expected to last for a week. However, UNEB opted for relocation to mitigate risks and logistical challenges associated with the school headteacher making daily trips to collect and return examination papers.

The relocation is a significant relief, eliminating the daily travel burden and associated fuel costs and risks. This marks the first time Nekemeya Memorial Seed Secondary School was set to host its own UCE exams after receiving an examination centre number from UNEB.

Ms Nalugemwa also appealed for support with feeding arrangements for some of the candidates, as accommodation in guest houses added to the financial strain for families. Meanwhile, examinations proceeded smoothly in other centres across Kalangala District, with over 200 candidates participating without major disruptions, despite some morning rain.
