Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has confirmed that Russia actively interfered in the United Kingdom’s 2016 Brexit referendum. Speaking on “The Rest is Politics” podcast, Sunak revealed that he sought clarity on potential Russian meddling shortly after becoming Prime Minister and received a definitive “yes” in response.
Sunak expressed that the UK has been too passive in addressing such foreign interference and has not adequately informed the public about efforts from overseas to disrupt its political processes. While he did not elaborate on the specific methods or scale of Russia’s involvement in the Brexit vote, the Prime Minister indicated that similar disinformation tactics are being employed in European politics.
He mentioned discussing these concerns with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, noting that “misinformation, disinformation that is emanating from Russia into German politics” is a significant issue. Sunak believes it is crucial to openly acknowledge these instigated political activities by adversaries like Russia to help voters in Germany and France understand the origins of certain political narratives.
This marks the first time a sitting UK Prime Minister has publicly stated Russia’s attempts to influence the Brexit poll. Previous reports, including a 2020 Intelligence and Security Committee report, highlighted concerns about Russian interference in UK elections, though they stopped short of definitively concluding an impact on the Brexit referendum result. The report did, however, criticize governments for not adequately assessing or countering the threat.
Despite denials from Moscow, the UK government stated in 2020 that it was “almost certain that Russian actors sought to interfere” in the 2019 general election. Recent reports have detailed sophisticated Russian disinformation campaigns, including the use of AI-generated fake videos, to spread false narratives globally. The UK is establishing a new center to combat disinformation, aiming to protect its citizens and democratic values from foreign adversaries.
