Uganda is set to become the global focal point for water and sanitation discussions as it prepares to host the International Water Association (IWA) Water and Development Congress and Exhibition in 2027. This significant selection, announced during the IWA’s Annual General Meeting in Glasgow, Scotland, positions Uganda to lead critical dialogues on water challenges, particularly those affecting low- and middle-income countries.
The National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) will spearhead Uganda’s hosting efforts, leveraging its proven track record in organizing major international water events. The congress, a premier gathering for water sector leaders, policymakers, researchers, and industry professionals, is anticipated to attract more than 3,000 delegates. This influx presents substantial opportunities for Uganda’s burgeoning meetings and conference tourism sector, stimulating demand for accommodation, transport, and hospitality services.
Following the announcement, IWA President Professor Hamanth Kasan and Executive Director Professor Kalanithy Vairavamoorthy met with an NWSC delegation. Professor Kasan expressed confidence in Uganda’s capacity to host a successful event, emphasizing the IWA’s commitment to enhancing African participation in global water discussions. NWSC Managing Director Dr Engineer Silver Mugisha assured the IWA leadership of Uganda’s readiness to deliver a high-quality event, highlighting the nation’s hospitality, infrastructure, and technical expertise.
This event is more than a conference; it’s a chance to showcase Uganda’s natural beauty and cultural attractions, from the source of the Nile to its national parks and gorilla habitats, potentially boosting tourism. Furthermore, Kampala 2027 aims to strengthen Africa’s voice in international water and sanitation policy, foster innovation, and build crucial partnerships. Discussions are also underway regarding the possibility of establishing an IWA African hub in the country. Preparations will involve close collaboration between the IWA, NWSC, and other national stakeholders, with specific dates and venues to be announced later.
