Hollywood analysts are forecasting a significant financial downturn for Tom Cruise’s new film, ‘Digger’. The satirical black comedy, starring Cruise as oil magnate Digger Rockwell, is reportedly on track to lose an estimated $245 million (£185 million).
Since its debut, ticket sales for ‘Digger’ have seen a sharp decline, dropping approximately 60% in its second weekend. The film has garnered only $35 million (£26 million) globally, a stark contrast to its substantial production and marketing budget, which is reported to be around $280 million (£211 million).
This performance puts ‘Digger’ in danger of joining the ranks of Hollywood’s most notorious box office bombs, alongside films like ‘Cutthroat Island’ and ‘John Carter’, which also suffered substantial financial losses.
Cruise himself has previously stated he doesn’t focus on opening weekend numbers, preferring to make films that have lasting appeal. However, the current box office trajectory of ‘Digger’ challenges this philosophy.
Variety initially projected the film to gross only $50 million worldwide. To break even, considering its budget, marketing, and distribution costs, ‘Digger’ would need to earn upwards of $350 million. Warner Bros, however, has contested this, suggesting the break-even point is closer to $300 million.
Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Alejandro G. Iñárritu, ‘Digger’ received mixed-to-negative reviews, leading Warner Bros to launch a campaign encouraging audiences to form their own opinions.
This financial struggle for ‘Digger’ contrasts sharply with Cruise’s recent blockbuster successes in franchises like ‘Top Gun’ and ‘Mission: Impossible’.
In related box office news, the sequel to ‘The Social Network’, titled ‘The Social Reckoning’, also underperformed on its opening weekend, taking in $5.5 million in the US. Globally, the film has grossed approximately $9 million.
