Saliva and Candida: Exploring the Link During Sexual Activity
While not a direct cause, the use of saliva during sexual activity could potentially exacerbate or contribute to candida overgrowth in some individuals. While the idea that saliva directly causes candida infections might be a misconception, it’s worth exploring how its use during sexual activity could play a role in recurring yeast infections. Candida, a type of fungus naturally present in the body, can sometimes overgrow, leading to an infection known as candidiasis, commonly called a yeast infection.
In women, the vaginal environment is carefully balanced. Factors like pH levels and the presence of beneficial bacteria help keep candida in check. When this balance is disrupted, candida can multiply excessively. Some experts suggest that the enzymes present in saliva, while beneficial for digestion, might alter the natural vaginal pH or disrupt the delicate microbial balance, creating an environment more favorable for candida to thrive.
It’s important to note that saliva itself doesn’t contain candida. However, the argument is that introducing it into the vaginal area could potentially alter the existing microflora. This is particularly relevant for individuals who experience recurrent yeast infections. If you are prone to candida overgrowth, it might be wise to consider this potential factor alongside other known triggers such as hormonal changes, certain medications, or tight-fitting clothing.
If you are experiencing persistent or recurrent symptoms of a yeast infection, such as itching, burning, or unusual discharge, it is crucial to consult a healthcare professional. They can provide an accurate diagnosis and recommend the most effective treatment plan tailored to your specific needs. Self-treating without a proper medical evaluation might not address the root cause and could lead to continued discomfort.
