A nationwide crackdown has resulted in the arrest of 552 suspects accused of defrauding the government’s Parish Development Model (PDM) program. The operation, which commenced on August 4, aims to safeguard public funds and ensure they are distributed to their intended recipients.

Police spokesperson Rusoke Kituuma confirmed the extensive arrests, noting that 429 of the accused have already been brought before the courts. The charges leveled against these individuals are severe and include theft, forgery, embezzlement, extortion, obtaining money by false pretense, conspiracy to defraud, and cheating.

The PDM is a government initiative designed to boost household incomes and foster economic development at the local parish level. However, allegations of corruption and misappropriation of these vital funds have prompted a swift and decisive response from law enforcement and security agencies.

Recent incidents highlighted by the source include the arrest of an LC1 chairperson accused of extorting over a million shillings from a PDM beneficiary. These individual cases underscore the broader pattern of alleged fraud that the current operation seeks to address. The intensified efforts reflect a commitment to accountability and the proper utilization of public resources intended for grassroots development.

This widespread operation signals a serious commitment by Ugandan authorities to combat corruption and ensure the integrity of development programs. The focus remains on bringing all individuals involved in defrauding the PDM to justice and recovering misappropriated funds.
