A legal battle in Kira Municipality concerning the election of MP George Musisi appears to be drawing to a close, as the challenger, Daniel Kananura of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), has formally requested the High Court in Wakiso to dismiss his petition.
Kananura, through his legal counsel, presented a motion to Justice George Okello on Monday, seeking to withdraw the petition that contested Musisi’s victory. The NRM candidate’s legal team argued that the petition had not unduly burdened the court or the respondents.
The case was slated for a further hearing, with the cross-examination of an Electoral Commission witness, Ruth Kashaga, expected. However, before Kashaga could testify, Kananura’s lawyer moved to withdraw the suit.
This move was met with strong resistance from the legal representatives of both MP Musisi and the Electoral Commission. They argued that their clients had incurred significant financial costs in defending the petition and sought compensation for these expenses.
The court is yet to rule on Kananura’s withdrawal application and the subsequent demands for costs from the respondents.
