Authorities have bolstered security in Mubende District’s Kitenga Sub-county after a disturbing spate of attacks left three people dead and five others injured. The unsettling nature of these incidents, perpetrated by individuals wielding machetes, has instilled widespread fear among the local population, prompting residents to report sleepless nights.
In response, security personnel have established bases within Kitenga Sub-county to actively monitor and address security threats, as well as to pursue those responsible for the violence. The Resident District Commissioner, Ms Beatrice Katsigazi, confirmed these measures, emphasizing the coordinated effort to bring the culprits to justice.
What makes these attacks particularly perplexing is the assailants’ modus operandi. According to local leaders, including Mr Dennis Baraka, the Kayebe Parish chief, the attackers often gain entry into homes without forcing their way in, proceed to kill their victims, and then leave without necessarily taking valuables such as money. This behavior has led to speculation that the motive might extend beyond simple robbery.
Mr Baraka highlighted a specific incident where a couple was severely hacked despite the presence of cash and valuable coffee within their home. While the assailants left the valuables, they reportedly took a motorcycle, potentially used for their escape. Further deepening the mystery, another victim was an elderly, bedridden man with cancer, living in a dilapidated home with minimal possessions, suggesting the attacks were not driven by theft.
These puzzling circumstances have fueled concerns among residents about potential attempts to incite unrest. The anxieties are further exacerbated by reports of another death in Kyenda Town Council, where a man was allegedly killed and his body left at a mosque, compounding the growing unease in the region.
