Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) agents executed a court-authorized search warrant at the residence of Minnesota Congresswoman Ilhan Omar. A spokesperson for the U.S. Justice Department confirmed the search, stating it is connected to a “criminal investigation” but offered no further details.
Omar, a Somali-American who immigrated to the U.S. as a child fleeing conflict, is a prominent Democrat and a frequent critic of President Donald Trump. She was first elected to Congress in 2018 and is currently running for re-election.
The U.S. Congress is not in session, and it remains unclear whether Omar was present at the home during the search. The BBC has reached out to the congresswoman for comment.
While the specifics of the investigation are unknown, Omar’s immigration status and records have been a subject of scrutiny from Republican lawmakers in the past. Earlier this year, a subpoena for her records was unsuccessfully filed by fellow Congresswoman Nancy Mace.
President Trump has previously been critical of Omar, suggesting she “should go back” to Somalia, despite U.S. citizenship being a requirement to serve in the House of Representatives. Omar has characterized these remarks as an “unhealthy and creepy obsession.”
Omar is the first Somali-American elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, representing a district in the Minneapolis area. She, along with Rashida Tlaib, were the first Muslim women to be elected to Congress.
