Bishop Serverus Jjumba of the Masaka Diocese has voiced his disapproval of schools that prevent students from attending classes because of unpaid feeding fees. During an annual pilgrimage Mass at the birthplace of Uganda Martyr Bruno Sserunkuma in Masaka City, the Bishop implored education leaders to handle these matters with greater sensitivity.

He stressed that school administrators should not resort to pressuring parents over meal and porridge fees. Instead, he advised that schools have governing and management bodies specifically tasked with resolving such financial issues.

Bishop Jjumba called for restraint from school managers, urging them to seek appropriate solutions rather than allowing fee disputes to negatively impact learners. He also acknowledged the government’s role in education but highlighted that public funding is insufficient for all school needs, making parental contributions essential.

While emphasizing the necessity of parental support, the Bishop also reminded parents of their duty to provide for their children’s education and welfare. He encouraged them to guide their children in faith and ensure a disciplined upbringing.

The discourse at the pilgrimage Mass, which drew thousands of Christians, also touched on community leadership and the importance of faith, drawing inspiration from the life of Uganda Martyr Bruno Sserunkuma. Other religious and military leaders also addressed the congregation on themes of faith, community, and peace.
