The Uganda Shilling is currently in a historic free fall, having crossed the Shs4,100 mark against the US dollar. This significant depreciation, the worst in a decade, has led to a sharp increase in fuel prices, with diesel now exceeding Shs7,100 per litre.
Data from commercial banks reveals the accelerating decline of the shilling. As of Wednesday, the unit was quoted at Shs4,090 for buying and Shs4,100 for selling. This represents a substantial drop from Shs3,960 just a week prior and Shs3,604 back in March.
Cumulatively, the shilling has lost over 11 percent of its value since the beginning of the year. This rapid devaluation has a direct impact on the cost of imported goods, most notably fuel, which is critical for transportation and many other sectors of the economy.
The current economic situation underscores the vulnerability of the Ugandan currency to market forces and external pressures, raising concerns among consumers and businesses alike about the rising cost of living and doing business.
