Former US President Donald Trump has publicly suggested that it is “time for Ukraine to get a new president,” following criticism from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky regarding a recent US-Russia diesel export deal. Trump asserted that Zelensky’s stance on continuing refinery attacks was creating “problems for the world” and advised Ukraine to “get a new leader who can make a deal.”
Zelensky had previously condemned the agreement, which aims to suspend sanctions on Russian diesel exports to the US, arguing it would empower Moscow financially to sustain its military operations. He characterized the deal as a “gift to Russian President Vladimir Putin” and warned that it could embolden Russia to continue its aggression, citing recent strikes on Ukrainian cities.
The deal, confirmed by Trump, intends to increase global diesel supply and lower prices, a move seen as an effort to combat rising fuel costs exacerbated by global conflicts. However, it has drawn criticism from European leaders as well. EU foreign affairs chief Kaja Kallas echoed Zelensky’s concerns, stating that easing pressure on Russia is not the current priority for Europe and that the bloc plans to implement further sanctions.
Russia and Ukraine have intensified strikes on each other’s energy infrastructure since the 2022 invasion, impacting global energy markets. The US-Israel conflict has also contributed to fuel supply limitations. Despite the controversy, Trump’s envoy described the intervention as “historic,” suggesting Ukraine needs leadership focused on peace. Ukraine is currently under martial law, suspending elections since the full-scale invasion began.
