Nigerian investors are setting their sights on Uganda, seeking out promising business ventures in sectors such as cement manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, fish processing, beef production, and palm oil. This move signifies a growing effort by both nations to deepen their economic and commercial relationships.
The Nigerian High Commission in Uganda confirmed that a delegation is currently engaging with government ministries, departments, and agencies to understand the necessary procedures for establishing businesses in the country. This follows a successful Uganda-Nigeria business forum held in September, which brought together key stakeholders from both nations to discuss investment avenues.
High Commissioner Misitura Abdulraheem stated that these discussions are a direct follow-up to the forum, focusing on tangible investment opportunities. The initiative aligns with the broader plan by both governments to establish a bilateral trade framework to foster enhanced economic cooperation and create sustainable commercial pathways.
Uganda’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicated that trade between the two nations has seen considerable growth, albeit still below its full potential. Official records show a significant increase in trade volume, rising from approximately $4 million in 2020 to about $34 million in the past year. This upward trend highlights the latent capacity for deeper commercial engagement, which could lead to increased investment, job creation, and technological exchange.
Discussions stemming from the business forum have pinpointed several strategic sectors for potential Nigerian investment, including cement production, manufacturing, insurance, fertilizers, and agro-industrialization. These proposed ventures hold the promise of expanding Uganda’s manufacturing and agro-processing capabilities, while also creating valuable employment opportunities and facilitating technology transfer.
