The International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued a firm rebuke against the “unprecedented” sanctions enacted by the United States. The court’s Registrar, Peter Lewis, stated that these actions, which include travel bans and asset freezes against ICC officials, are an “unacceptable” interference with judicial independence.
Lewis highlighted that the sanctions are seen as an attempt to obstruct the court’s work and intimidate its personnel. He stressed that the ICC is an independent international judicial body and that its investigations and prosecutions are conducted impartially, based on evidence.
The ICC Registrar further emphasized that the court remains resolute in its mission to hold perpetrators of genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity accountable. He stated that these sanctions will not impede the court’s ability to fulfill its mandate or compromise its commitment to victims seeking justice.
The US sanctions were reportedly a response to the ICC’s investigations into alleged war crimes committed by US forces and their allies in Afghanistan. The court, however, maintains that it has jurisdiction over nationals of state parties and situations referred to the court, regardless of nationality.
The ICC Registrar concluded by stating that the court will continue to operate and uphold the rule of law, underscoring the importance of international cooperation in combating impunity for the most serious crimes. He appealed to all states to support the court’s independence and its critical role in global justice.
