Deputy Chief Justice Moses Kazibwe Kawumi has called on Ugandans, particularly the younger generation, to cultivate strong public speaking and communication skills. He emphasized that these abilities are crucial for personal growth, effective leadership, and the overall transformation of the nation.

Justice Kawumi made these remarks at Makerere University during the launch of “Voice Command,” a book authored by communication coach Apuuli Babigumira, and the “Mambo Talks Africa” initiative. He lauded Babigumira for creating platforms designed to tackle the communication challenges many Ugandans face.

According to Kawumi, these initiatives are set to empower individuals to overcome their fear of public speaking, build confidence, and articulate ideas that can drive positive change across Africa. He noted that the “Mambo Talks Africa” initiative specifically aims to discover, develop, and amplify African ideas through storytelling.

Babigumira shared his personal journey, revealing that he once struggled significantly with public speaking, which hampered his early leadership aspirations. He recounted how an unexpected shift from his desired law studies to communication at Makerere University ultimately changed his life’s trajectory.

Determined to overcome his shyness, Babigumira joined the Makerere University Communication Skills Association, where he gained practical experience and developed the confidence to address audiences. His persistence led to various leadership roles throughout his university and subsequent professional career, including work in sales, network marketing, and public sensitization for the Judiciary.

Babigumira encouraged Ugandans not to let fear, criticism, or past setbacks silence their voices. He stressed that communication is a learnable skill that improves with practice and a willingness to learn from mistakes. He also warned that when educated individuals remain silent, it leaves public discourse and decision-making to others, potentially hindering national development.

The launch of “Voice Command” and “Mambo Talks Africa” is seen as a significant step in promoting confident expression and sharing African voices and ideas with broader audiences.
